GHG Emissions by Country and Economic Sector

November 3, 2021

Context

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which cause climate change have increased 50 fold since the mid-1800s. Energy makes up nearly three-quarters of global emissions, followed by agriculture. Breaking down the energy sector into its sub-sectors, electricity and heat generation make up the largest portion of emissions, followed by transportation and manufacturing. 64% of GHG emissions come from just 10 countries, while the 100 least-emitting contributed less than 3%.

Data overview

This dataset contains internationally comparable emissions data on GHG from multiple data source (CAIT, PIK, UNFCCC, GCP) from 1850 to 2018. Additionally, it further shows GHG emissions for six individual economic sectors and subsectors on a global scale. The GHGs include carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), and nitrous oxide (N₂O). The economic sectors include agriculture, bunker fuels, energy, industrial processes, land-use change/forestry, and waste.
